Launching Launch from the sand beach adjacent to the parking lot at Spooner’s Cove. The waves are usually small and break close to shore but a surf launch may be necessary. Tour description After paddling out of Spooner’s Cove, turn left and head south. If there is a swell, paddle a safe distance offshore to avoid the shoals and breaking waves. As you paddle along this pristine coastline, imagine what it was like thousands of years ago when the Chumash Indians inhabited the area. Several Chumash villages dating back 9000 years have been discovered between Spooner’s Cove and Port San Luis.

Extreme caution must be exercised when riding these waves; the currents are strong and the waves can be very powerful. It’s a good idea to check with the Harbor Patrol first. Launching Launch at the west end of the State Park Marina parking lot, adjacent to the rental-boat dock. There is no surf but the mud can be slippery. Tour description From the marina, head north toward Morro Rock. To the right, on the bluff overlooking the marina, is the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History. Across the bay is the sand spit and beyond is the open ocean.

Enter the State Beach and park in the lower parking lot adjacent to the beach. Restrooms, picnic facilities, and telephones are provided. Fee. To reach the landing site, exit Highway 1 at the northern end of Moonstone Beach Drive which is about five and one-half miles south of San Simeon. Park on the south side of the bridge at Leffingwell Landing. A public launch ramp provides access to the beach, and parking is permitted along Moonstone Drive. No fee. Camping Tent and RV campsites are available at San Simeon State Park on Highway 1 about six miles southeast of William R.
