Launching Launch from the sand beach adjacent to the parking lot at Spooner’s Cove. The waves are usually small and break close to shore but a surf launch may be necessary. Tour description After paddling out of Spooner’s Cove, turn left and head south. If there is a swell, paddle a safe distance offshore to avoid the shoals and breaking waves. As you paddle along this pristine coastline, imagine what it was like thousands of years ago when the Chumash Indians inhabited the area. Several Chumash villages dating back 9000 years have been discovered between Spooner’s Cove and Port San Luis.
Extreme caution must be exercised when riding these waves; the currents are strong and the waves can be very powerful. It’s a good idea to check with the Harbor Patrol first.
