Participation can extend to large numbers of people, as developers, users or observers. Thus, it is appropriate that the technical principles should be opened up in the form of a multidisciplinary exposition so that participants can appreciate the diverse contributions from science and engineering. Aerospace simulation provides a strong motivation for this as well as a large community of interest. This is the intended purpose of this text on Computational Modelling and Simulation of Aircraft and Environment.

In its simplest form, this is formulated as a sequence of so-called elementary rotations, which are rotations about a single axis of a given axis system. After any rotation, the axis system is reorientated and the next rotation is performed from there. The trigonometry is easy to construct; the big problem is to appreciate the equivalence of a rotation and a projection when applied to objects, with the consequences that this has for the sequencing of elementary rotations. In a rotation, the vector rotates and the axis system remains fixed; in a projection, the vector remains fixed and the axis system rotates.

In this context ‘power’ involves an energy source, a powerplant,20 a distribution network,21 actuation equipment and various effectors. ‘Control’ involves sensors and measurements that are combined in order to determine how drive the various effectors. ‘Information’ involves anything that collects, communicates, records and displays data. Whereas it is easy to think of a generic airplane or a generic helicopter (in terms of layout and appearance), it is difficult to think of embedded systems in this way because of the level of design detail, the range of applicable technologies and the need to tailor a system solution for each aircraft type.
