The change in the resonance frequency changes the amplitude of vibration. This means that, as the tip approaches the surface, the attraction force rises leading to a proportional change in both lever resonance frequency and vibration amplitude. By monitoring these values as the tip scans across the surface, it is possible to trace the surface profile. The amplitude of vibration can be measured optically , or by use of an interferometer . A signal representing the amplitude of vibration is usually used in a feedback loop to maintain the tip at a specific distance from the surface as the tip scans across a determined path.
