Although our criteria for participation in the project excluded children with just speech problems, it is not always possible to differentiate these children based on information at referral, and a proportion of the sample were subsequently identified as having only speech difficulties. Since our hypothesis was that difficulties with phonological processing and memory – not just speech – would predict later morphosyntactic skills, this group of children was considered separately in our profiling of the sample (see below).

Another possibility is that children with deficits in social engagement pay limited attention to communication and language, and that this delays their processing of phonology – unless phonological processing is a particular strength and even a source of pleasure for them. Longer-term follow-up is needed to determine whether some of the children with poor sociocognition and poor phonology show later ‘normalization’ of phonology. We conclude from our findings that longitudinal studies can throw new light on sources of developmental language deficits and how these evolve.
