The railroad was, primarily, the catalyst that attracted development of the settlements and businesses that are seen today. The IC and Rock Island jointly organized the Waterloo Railroad in 1956 to purchase the Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern; IC bought the Rock Island's half interest in 1968. This is the present day organization that controls and runs the ARR for the people of the state. The faces of all but one were unrecognizable and their identity was disclosed by the clothing and bodily appearances alone.

Tour Alaska attaches the first three private dome railcars to the Anchorage/Fairbanks daily train service. Ry., the length of the branch being 33 4-10 miles, which was completed May 27, 1888. (Rec. of Corp., vol. 11, page 322.) On September 28, it went into the hands of a receiver, who operated it until November 30, 1881, and on December 1, 1881, the road was sold under foreclosure proceedings to the Cleveland, Akron and Columbus Railroad Company, organized by the purchasers. (Rec. of Corp., vol. 23, page 447.) This sale was not confirmed and a receiver was. appointed April 14, 1882.
